2012 State Budget in Review

Treasurer Jack Snelling delivered his second State Budget today. The treasurer was keen to emphasize investment in skills and the lack of new tax increases. At the same time he cut public service jobs and delayed a number of state government initiatives.

To find out what the public wanted to see in today;s budget, we sent out roving reporter Stephen McCallum into Adelaide Rundle Mall.

Here’s how the Treasurer sold it:

To talk us through what’s going on in the politics of the budget and its delivery we were joined by Head of the School of History and Politics at the University of Adelaide Clem Macintyre

To get the union perspective on the State Budget we spoke to President of SA Unions Janet Giles, reporter Catherine Zengerer started by asking her if she was disappointed with the decision to cut 1000 jobs from the state public service.

The union covering those working for the State Government is the Public Service Association. Industrial Officer with the PSA Peter Christopher joined us t discuss the impacts these cuts would have on PSA members and the public.

Qantas slashes more jobs

Qantas announced this week it would slash 500 engineering jobs in Melbourne and close its heavy maintenance base as part of cost-cutting measures.

The airline will also split its domestic and international arms. The announcement comes after a drawn out dispute with engineers and pilots which resulted in Qantas grounding its fleet last year.

Federal Secretary of the Aircraft Engineers Union, Steve Purvinas,  says he wasn’t surprised to hear of the latest round of cuts. He spoke with Catherine Zengerer.

Letter to Clive – the AMWU invite Mr Palmer to visit Aussie maritime industries

The AMWU has written to Clive Palmer, inviting him to take a tour of  local shipbuilding facilities after he said he was forced to build ships in China because shipbuilding didn’t happen in Australia.

Mr Palmer announced recently he would build a Titanic replica as well as a number of ships for Queensland Nickel “because Australia lacks a maritime industry.”

AMWU State Secretary Tim Ayres says Australia has a highly skilled, innovative, thriving shipbuilding industry.

Catherine Zengerer spoke with Tim about Clive Palmer, how to keep Aussie jobs on shore, and the need to protect our workers and compensate them in case of injury.
