Qantas slashes more jobs

Qantas announced this week it would slash 500 engineering jobs in Melbourne and close its heavy maintenance base as part of cost-cutting measures.

The airline will also split its domestic and international arms. The announcement comes after a drawn out dispute with engineers and pilots which resulted in Qantas grounding its fleet last year.

Federal Secretary of the Aircraft Engineers Union, Steve Purvinas,  says he wasn’t surprised to hear of the latest round of cuts. He spoke with Catherine Zengerer.
