No job, but no redundancy payments

500 Whyalla employees of a mining company, Leighton Contractors, have been left angry and distressed after they were told last week, that they would not receive redundancy payments, despite their positions being made redundant.

It was announced earlier in the year that Leighton Contractors’ contract had not been renewed by OneSteel, and would be taken over by BGC.

As a result, the production staff at Leighton Contractors were told their positions were no longer required at the company, and they would be made redundant. We have the Australian Workers Union’s Whyalla branch organiser Scott Martin with us to explain how this has come about.
