SA Unions Secretary Janet Giles joined the show to discuss some of the elements Dave raised in his speech:

Ms Redmond said there were about 2000 public servants in the SA department and about 161,000 students in the public school system, a ratio of about one to 80. In Victoria, she said there were about 2200 education public servants to 548,000 students, a ratio of about one to 249.

We talked to David Smith, the Acting President of the Australian Education Union’s SA Branch about what there numbers mean on the ground.

Now she seems to have done it again, claiming that the South Australian Education should aim for a comparable ratio of workers to students as Victoria.

Catherine Zengerer asks Peter Christopher, Senior Industrial Officer with the Public Service Association, why that would be a bad idea for South Australia.

McCann evaluated 235 services across metropolitan Local Health Networks to “identify opportunities to improve services or deliver them in a more efficient manner, as well as to achieve savings to contribute to SA Health’s budget savings strategy”.

These services include practice nurse programs, services for youth, women and the elderly, health promotion programs, and an Aboriginal health workforce initiative.

SA Health has also indicated 105 jobs across non-hospital health services in South Australia could be at risk as they strive to achieve budget cuts, though they say the $14 million of savings will not be brought about by forced redundancies.

The review has been prompted by a continuous increase in health spending, but Professor Fran Baum, Director of the Southgate Institute for Health, Society & Equity at Flinders University, questions whether programs aimed at promoting health should be on the chopping bloke.

She spoke with Catherine Zengerer.

A living wage for those out of work not only affects the unemployed. Australia’s employers are increasingly moving to use casual working arrangements and scam contracting to avoid paying their workers superannuation, long service leave and penalty rates. Workers fall back to Newstart at the discretion of their employer. And these workers are often not eligible for large purchases like housing not because of affordability but not having secure employment. Australians peak union body is holding a summit on insecure work in March in a bid to put secure work as an issue for consideration for all Australians when voting at the upcoming federal election.

The annual awards celebrate the union movement’s achievements in South Australia.
